My
kids are obsessed with "having a party." The difference between a party and eating is this beautiful linen tablecloth. We used it for my daughter's birthday, and it's since become an indicator that it's time to celebrate something together. Something like seeing a red cardinal in the yard, or a particularly beautiful art camp masterpiece. We take out our pretty tablecloth even when the kitchen is a complete mess. It comes out even though we don't live in the perfect house. It comes out when my most beautiful attempt at a snack board is dip in an old baby food storage container, and cherries in the top part of a broken strainer. There actually aren't any prerequisites for choosing to make something beautiful. Small, beautiful things probably matter most when our lives feel the messiest. Don't put perfect between you and beauty. Beauty doesn't favor perfection, it favors participation.
Inspired by our linen tablecloth magic, I've continued to sprinkle linen around my life this summer. Linen reminds me to enjoy these particular warm month moments, which otherwise feel so fleeting. We also sleep on linen sheets year round because they are my favorite (a determination made after years on other fabrics). Wishing you a second half of summer filled with small, beautiful things. For linen things, see my favorites below.
With much love,
Olivia
